This session will highlight the current Electronic Waste issues and address product stewardship efforts in the Electronics Industry. Featured topics will include: Brominated Flame Retardants, NEPSI update and other Product Stewardship initiatives, CIWMB efforts in Electronic Waste management, and advances in technology for more sustainable products.

Speaker Bios:

Kit Cole

Kit Cole serves as Advisor to Board Member Michael Paparian at the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB). Prior to joining CIWMB, Kit was a Consultant providing fiscal and organizational analysis to cities, counties and state agencies (including the California Supreme Court). Kit served as Senior Policy Analyst to the Assembly Natural Resources Committee where she worked on legislation regarding diversion and disposal, the California Clean Air Act and the California Tire Recycling Act. Kit graduated from UC Davis with a BA in political science and has a Masters in Public Administration from USC.

Sarah Diefendorf

Sarah Diefendorf is the Executive Director of EFC9. She has 15 years experience in environmental and economic planning and research and has directed a number of programs focused on pollution prevention and environmental integration in industry. Since 1996, she has directed a number of P2 projects that concentrate on several different industries including, dry cleaners, printers, metal finishers, electronics manufacturers and construction equipment manufacturers. Currently, one of the major initiatives at EFC9 focuses on brominated flame retardants in electronics, foam and furniture. She holds an MS in Environmental Geography from Cambridge University and is currently pursuing her Doctorate from Cambridge as well. The focus of her dissertation is The Environmental Industry in California.

Adrienne Priselac

Adrienne Priselac works on the Waste Reduction Team for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Office of Solid Waste and Pollution Prevention in San Francisco. The Region 9 Office of Solid Waste and Pollution Prevention promotes waste reduction, reuse and recycling of many materials, encourages the use of green building materials and organics, and has initiated a campaign to reduce electronic waste. Adrienne coordinates the Organic Materials Management and Jobs Through Recycling Programs for the Waste Reduction Team and is also very involved in electronic equipment end of-life management.
Prior to joining the EPA two years ago Adrienne worked for the San Francisco Department of the Environment on the environmental education and public information program. Adrienne received a BS in Environmental Science from the University of San Francisco and participated in a Directed Research Project in Costa Rica through Boston University on "Soil Fertility of Shaded Coffee Plants in Central Costa Rica". Adrienne is completing her MA in Resource Management and Environmental Planning at San Francisco State University with a focus on the economics and geography of regional planning.
